... was the brainchild of Warren Beatty and producer Charles Feldman. Beatty was supposed to star in it, but he refused to work with other cast members – including the French model Capucine, a former girlfriend of Feldman, and Woody Allen who kept building up his part in the script. Beatty lived to regret his petulance, saying "I diva'ed my way out of the movie. I walked off of What's New, Pussycat? thinking they couldn't do it without me. I was wrong."
